Tons of history on the GridCard this week. The Third Saturday in October is the name given to the Alabama vs Tennessee football rivalry which began in 1901. The Crimson Tide has won the last eleven straight, but prior to that--starting in the mid-nineties--the Volunteers won ten of twelve. Ohio State and Purdue first met in on the gridiron in 1891. They'll play for the Old Oaken Bucket on Saturday. But the big game this week--in Michigan anyway--is the clash between the Wolverines and Spartans.
UM dominated this series early on (33-6-3), but--in the fifties and sixties under Biggie Munn and Duffy Daugherty, MSU compiled a 14-4-2 record. From 1970-2007, power shifted back--as UM went 30-8. But since 2008, MSU has had the advantage going 8-2.
In 1898, when Michigan played Michigan State for the first time and defeated the Michigan Agricultural College Aggies 39-0, there was no World Series played. The Boston Beaneaters were the champions of baseball that year. The World Series wasn't established as an annual event until 1905.
Game One and Game Two of the Fall Classic are in the Second Game GridCard mix this week--which finishes up with Baylor @ West Virginia and Georgia Tech @ Virginia Tech--and the NFL Thursday Night Dolphins @ Texans matchup.
